I suppose the biggest difference is that in 1988 Tony La Russa used his absolute best pitcher against Kirk Gibson while Aaron Boone used a non-reliever who hadn’t pitched in a month to face Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman with the game on the line. Whoops.

Whatever the case, Freeman murdered that ball. He knew it was out the millisecond he made contact. Mercy.
